Tight hip flexors can cause a wide variety of problems. If you feel tightness in the front of your hips after sitting too long, experience low back pain, or feel like you are bending forward all the time, your hip flexors could be the culprit. Here are three ways to stretch your hip flexors to help release the tightness and reset the muscles.
The hip flexors help flex the knee up towards the chest. They also come up and connect to the spine, so when they are tight, they can cause hip and back pain. They are important for activities like walking, running, and many other daily movements. The hip flexors are made up of several muscles including the iliacus and the psoas major, often called the iliopsoas. The other hip flexors are the rectus femoris, sartorius, and the pectineus.
These hip pain relief stretches & exercises don’t necessarily need to be done in bed, but they may help relieve hip pain in the morning before getting up, and/or when going to bed at night.
Often tight hip flexor muscles can cause hip pain. My favorite stretch for this area is a modified hip flexor stretch. It’s great for the hip, knee, and back area.
Hip osteoarthritis (OA) can cause pain in the hips, back & knees, and it can pain when walking. These are moderate hip osteoarthritis exercises, so if they are too difficult, check out my beginner hip osteoarthritis exercises.
Greater trochanteric bursitis, aka hip bursitis, can be very painful & debilitating. It can be caused by trauma to the area, a tight IT band/TFL, or even an issue somewhere else in the body, like the back, knees, or ankles.
Hip osteoarthritis (OA) can be very painful and make the hips stiff. Often simple exercises will help gain movement in the hips and reduce pain. These 5 hip exercises, which can be done lying down, may help.
When the hips are stiff and tight, exercises can help loosen up the area to make the muscles more relaxed. These exercises start with some easier isometrics and progress to a little harder.
Therapeutic Yoga is a great way to help relieve hip pain by incorporating physical therapy and yoga. Trudy, a fellow PT and registered yoga teacher from HEAL Wellness and Therapy, stopped by to guide me through some stretches and exercises for the hip.
The biggest myth about hip arthritis pain relief is that exercise makes the condition worse. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, one of the most beneficial exercises for hip arthritis pain relief is the lunge. Lunges are great to do every day, but make sure to progress slowly so it doesn’t get inflamed.
